Wireless for the shipping industry
TekTrap designs and manufactures advanced security devices for freighters and shipping containers. The CargoKeeper is durable, robust and strategically positioned inside containers. Using FM waves was adequate four or five years ago, but advances in GPS and GSM technologies offer more efficiency and opportunity. TekTrap was looking into GSM solutions to reduce the size of its devices, take advantage of M2M (machine-to-machine) technology and expand its potential customer base. Without any GSM expertise, it was difficult for TekTrap to find the right resources. In addition, identifying appropriate SIM cards and searching for a provider of M2M systems proved to be a real challenge.
Wavefront Accelerated Program with NRC-IRAP
With financial support from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NCR-IRAP), Wavefront offers emerging wireless SMEs subsidized access to accelerated commercialization services.
In less than two weeks, Wavefront helped TekTrap understand M2M and connected them to M2M connectivity provider, Jasper Wireless, as well as with the appropriate business division at Rogers Communications. In addition, TekTrap was able to identify the optimal SIM cards to use for the difficult conditions containers are put through; vibration resistance, temperature changes and handling were all factors to consider.
The Success
Planning that could have taken months was realized in just a few weeks with help from Wavefront. The project is currently being piloted with four customers, using 50 devices with integrated SIM cards in Canada, the United States, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. At the end of the project, TekTrap's goal is to have six times the number of employees and to have 100,000 to 200,000 devices in operation.
